How many miles should I have on my running shoes?

Wear & tear stems from the road. They’re in pretty good shape, but I’m not sure at what point I should invest in a new pair of sneakers.

How many miles you get depends on your weight, how biomechanically effecient you are and how fast you are. Elite or competitive runnes doing 70+ miles per week will get more miles out of a pair of shoes then someone running 20 miles a week.

Running shoes don’t look worn out when they need to be replaced. The uppers are often still in great shape. However, most of the cushioning is gone after 500 miles. Given how valuable your knees and other joints are it is foolish to try to get the last mile out of a pair of shoes.

Here are some signs of worn out shoes.

1. the shoes feel flat or you feel the pavement more than usual
2. new small aches in your legs after a run
3. the black outer sole is worn through to the white cushioning layer
