You SHOULD be applying the brake anyway, before you put your vehicle into gear. Failing to do so, is very hard on your transmission brake bands and one way clutches. The safety factor is what makes it an NHTSA requirement that ALL automatic transmission equipped vehicles be equipped with a BSI (brake-shift-interlock) swtich. Attempting to defeat it may be cause it not to pass a safety inspection.
