Each year, more than 500,000 people in the US are treated in emergency departments, and more than 700 people die as a result of bicycle-related injuries.
Children are at particularly high risk for bicycle-related injuries. In 2001, children 15 years and younger accounted for 59% of all bicycle-related injuries seen in US emergency departments.
Bicyclist collision injuries are eligible for financial compensation.
November 24, 2008 – Bicycle safety advice should not be taken for granted even if you are a great bicycle rider, as such tips may save your life someday.
Bicyclists and automobile drivers need to learn to share the road. It is important for their own safety that bicyclists wear a helmet, obey traffic signals, and increase their visibility to automobile drivers by using a front light and rear reflector. Wearing brightly colored clothing is also smart.
Facts about a bicyclist collision
Why so much advice? Because as pleasant as a bike ride can be, bicyclists, like motorcyclists, are very vulnerable to injury, zooming through traffic without the structural body protection an automobile provides.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 698 bicyclists were killed, and an additional 44,000 were injured in the U.S. in 2007. In New York State, 51 bicyclists died in 2007.
According to NHTSA records, fatalities among bicyclists occurred more frequently in urban areas (72%), at non-intersection locations (64%), between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m. (26%), and during the months of June (11%) and September (11%).
Whatever the circumstances are, an injured bicyclist may recover financial compensation if the accident was the fault of another party
