The value of unpainted ceramics and an older kiln?
My friend just bought a house from an estate and with it came a shop full of ceramics of different kinds. There are many, many cermics, different sizes, different holidays, and they are all fired just not painted. My friend would like to sell them, but has no idea of their worth. She also has an older kiln that still works as it has fired all of these ceramics that I speak of. We are just hoping to get an approximate value of these items so she knows what to ask for them. She doesn’t want to “rob” anyone, but she also doesn’t want to get “robbed”.
The unfired ceramics that your friend has are called “bisqueware.” They can be low fire (cone 06) or mid-range high fire (cone 6). I am guessing they are probably low fire. Link #1 has today’s prices for all kinds of bisqueware, to give you an idea. “Paint your own pottery” places order these for their clients to paint and fire. The easiest way to sell these would be in a bundle to a business such as this. Otherwise it will be forever to get rid of them piece by piece. They are very fragile and can break easily if bumped wrong.
As far as the kiln, electric, I am assuming, it depends on a lot of things: computerized or manual, how old, how big, manufacturer and model, condition of kiln bricks, elements, relays etc. Does it have venting, shelves and furniture included? There is usually a metal plate on the outside of the kiln where the model number, voltage and current are listed. This is important info to help you price. Link #2 has info and prices on today’s kilns. You may be able to call the manufacturer to get an idea of the age, by model number, and the other features. Anyone who buys will want to know what maximum temperature it will fire to. If it is in great condition, then you may be able to get half of today’s prices. If it has been fired a lot, then it may need new elements and other components, which brings the price way down.
So you have some research to do on this one. Sometimes it is easier to donate an old kiln to a school since they will come and take it away.
