Flow Saddle
Intense road riding – muscle spasms?
On a few occasions I have had muscle spasms in the front top of my thigh when I rise from the saddle to climb or sprint, forcing me to ease off and sit down.
Is this due to: Salt deficiency; De-Hydration; Shorts restricting blood flow or am I simply riding too hard?
Does anybody know the causes?
It’s a simple fatigue issue. You need more time in the saddle at lower intensities. They use to call it ‘lsd’ – long steady distance. This means spending hours in the light and easy exertion zones. This is caused by the specific muscle going too far into the anaerobic zone for too long, and the waste products from burning glycogen build up preventing the synapse from occurring. If you feel it in one part of your quad, the rest are not far behind. Hydration and electrolyte replacement can help postpone this, but unless you do more base miles, it’ll keep happening.
